Aurora Ant Control

How Can You Tell an Odorous House Ant From a Pavement Ant?

Telling odorous house ants and pavement ants apart can be challenging. Size alone won't settle it, since both are small and dark. The quickest test is the smell. Crushing an odorous house ant releases a distinct odor often described as rotten coconut, while pavement ants have no noticeable smell at all.

Location is the second tell. Odorous house ants nest indoors and trail toward moisture, which is why they turn up around sinks, dishwashers, and bathroom baseboards. Pavement ants build outdoors under hard surfaces and push up small mounds of loose soil through driveway cracks, patio joints, and sidewalk seams. If you see fine dirt piles along a slab edge, it’s probably a pavement ant nest.

What we typically recommend is checking the driveway and patio seams before assuming the nest is inside. If the soil piles are there, the treatment belongs outdoors, and treating the kitchen won’t resolve it. Our licensed technicians are familiar with local ant species to identify the correct pest and create an effective treatment plan for your specific problem.

Risks of Untreated Ants in Homes

Ants are more than just a nuisance; they can also introduce genuine risks to your property and health if left unchecked.

Some potential hazards include:

• Food contamination and sanitation. Ants crawl across contaminated exterior surfaces before finding their way inside, which can ruin unprotected food and spread bacteria onto your kitchen countertops and preparation areas.
• Colony multiplication (budding). Ignoring an active infestation gives the colony time to expand. When threatened by over-the-counter sprays, some ants engage in “budding,” where the colony fractures and establishes new nests.
• Hidden structural and property damage. Untreated carpenter ants excavate interior wood framing, studs, and joists, while large pavement ant colonies erode the sand and soil base beneath driveway slabs, pavers, and patio foundations.

How Our Experts Trace an Ant Trail Back to the Nest

Our QualityPro Certified team follows a proven process to solve the problem at its root:

Identifying the Species

We start by determining what type of ant has invaded your space. Because odorous house ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants require different treatments, accurate identification is our first priority.

Following Foraging Trails

Whether they’re squeezing through foundation cracks or following plumbing lines into the kitchen, we observe the ants' behavior and track their pheromone trails to pinpoint hidden entry points.

Locating the Main Nest & Satellite Colonies

By tracking the trails backward, we locate the primary harborages and any satellite nests. Finding the location allows us to target the source directly instead of just treating the symptoms in your living areas.

Applying Targeted Baits

We strategically place non-repellent baits along active trails. The workers carry this bait deep into the nest to share with the colony and the queen, eliminating the population at the source without scattering them.
